Heredity and Hormones

Paper Summary:

The paper argues that both genetics and hormonal patterns influence the likelihood that a person will display a certain type of behavior when put into certain circumstances. The paper offers examples of how genetics and hormones can affect stressful situations as well as play a large role in shaping our overall personalities. The paper therefore contends that to a significant extent, our behavior is deeply affected by our genetic makeup as well as the hormones that are present in our system at any given time.

"Human behavior is perhaps one of the most complex and sensitive subjects that a psychologist can study. This is because there is really no cause and effect blueprint that shows which people will display what behavior in any given circumstance. Furthermore, whenever findings are made and settled upon, the obvious next step is to apply those findings to real world human behaviors. However, this can only stir controversy because the expected outcome would be to label people as being either more or less likely to behave in certain ways. And just because someone has a genetic or hormonal disposition towards aggression, depression, or certain sexual behaviors does not necessarily mean that person will be a criminal, suicidal, or homosexual. Still, it is an incontrovertible fact that human behavior is influenced by both heredity and hormones."
