Gun Control

Paper Summary:

This paper presents the opinion that gun control should be at the forefront of political discussions in the U.S. The writer points out that, while overall crime may be down, the recent occurrence of some major gun crimes, including the assassination-style shootings in the Washington area in 2003, are and should be a serious public issue. The writer also looks at other issues that effect voters and why they often take precedence over the gun issue.

"The Democratic Party in 2002 made much of the plight of the working poor and other economic issues such as prescription drugs for elder citizens. Nonetheless the Republicans gained seats in Congress. But Bush's economic policy is now seen as a failure by much of the electorate, and so are his attempts at diplomacy regarding Iraq. (Teixeira 2003) In some cases, politicians are trying to make voter agendas out of other issues, such as abortion, but they are making little headway with those issues except in niches of the U.S. electorate, such as Hispanics. There is precious little in the press except talk about Iraq as a potential Vietnam and the effect of that on the already shaky economy. There is talk about gun control only tangentially to the trials of Muhammad and Malvo."
