Persuasive Essay # 107760 :: Fatism: A Small Word for a Huge Ethical Issue
A discussion about biases against the overweight, termed fatism, and how this is destructive to the well-being of society.
Written in 2006; 4,124 words; 14 sources; APA; $ 110.95
Paper Summary:
This paper argues that fatism, obesitism, sizism, or weightism (all words that have the same implicit meaning and that will be used interchangeably in this paper) blatantly and categorically denies the moral right to a fully meaningful quality of life. Fatism attacks millions of sufferers in the United States, in the areas of self-esteem, personal relationships, prosperity, employment discrimination, physical and emotional welfare, and health care. It is a pervasive and systematic detriment to the overall well-being of society, much like racism and sexism. The writer attempts to dispel many of the myths about weightism, explain the hazards of weight bias, and show that fatism has no significant place in an ethical society.
From the Paper:
"Her oncologist pronounced her cancer-free and referred her for radiation treatments. I took her to see the radiologist, and when she came out of his office, she was in tears. She wouldn't tell me why until we were safely inside my car with the windows rolled up. Then she told me that the radiologist refused to treat her because he said she might "break his table." Outraged, I wanted to go inside and tell him what he could do with his table. She asked me not to. I began an extensive search for a radiology facility that could accommodate her size, and finally found one in Philadelphia, two hours from home. The only requirement was that they asked out-of-town patients to remain in Philadelphia for the eight weeks of treatment. She refused to go. I told her I would go with her and stay the entire time.. Her brother said he would visit every weekend. She still refused. She had never been away from home and she was frightened. I am stubborn but she was more stubborn. She did not get the recommended treatment."
