This paper argues that electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) does have value and should not be abandoned as a treatment method. The writer of this paper believes that while it is possible to disagree with its administration, it is possible to dislike a treatment and still be ethical in its use. Ultimately, the paper contends that if a treatment is used to benefit the patient, if the patient experiences positive and lasting effects, and if it is conducted in a professional manner by a medical professional, then treatment can be ethical, no matter how disliked it might be.

"Few medical practices have a more negative image in the public mind than electroconvulsive therapy. Discussion of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) frequently raises the image of an unresponsive, drooling patient with his or her mind damaged beyond repair by an inhumane procedure being performed. Another popular image is that of ECT being used by unethical medical personnel as an act of punishment or of revenge. As is often the case, the public image is an exaggerated and distorted depiction of a therapeutic method that does have some value. However, the perception is not entirely inaccurate, given that there is a "dark side" to ECT, which..."
