Paper Summary:
The paper discusses how the employment process affords latitude in responsible hiring but strict penalties for those who violate established anti-discrimination laws. The paper relates that it is ethically correct for an employer to deny a job if an applicant displayed poor grooming standards, a threatening stance or other habits that would not be beneficial to conducting business on behalf of the organization. The paper therefore shows how within established guidelines, it is ethical to judge applicants solely upon their appearance.
From the Paper:
"The job selection process remains a series of agreements that will eventually result in a mutual agreement between the employer and applicant, culminating in the offer and acceptance of the job. Prior to an interview taking place, most employers' impression of the applicant's ability is based on an application packet that may, or may not deliver an accurate representation of the candidate. It is reasonable to assume that an employer will reject a 300 pound applicant for a Vegas showgirl position. Acceptance of this applicant could serve as a detriment to the business. An employer would be unwise to hire a young thug for a reputable position that requires daily contact with customers."
