Paper Summary:
The writer, a firefighter, describes the emergency that was the start of his/her career. The writer depicts the fire and his/her actions to extinguish the flames and rescue the inhabitants. The writer expresses his/her feelings about the father and youngest daughter who they had not managed to rescue and who did not survive.
From the Paper:
"In 1998, I was working as a firefighter, and on this occasion, a call came in at 4:35 am. I was then working at Station 2, Fort Walton Beach, Florida. I had not been there long, for I had just graduated from the Fire Academy. The call that morning was to a house fire with occupants, fully involved. I could see smoke from the fire station, and as we left the fire station, lights flashing, sirens blasting, the only thing I could think about was whether or not I was going to have to enter this burning house."
