"Now, you might wonder if statements like that make me mad. After all, I grew up with this company. I watched my father sweat for this company for forty-five years. The engineers who designed our vehicles are my friends, and here he is saying that our products are as obsolete as an electric typewriter. But you know what? I had to admit that I think that Mr. Friedman has a point. It's absolutely true that we have been incredibly slow to recognize that the world needs a new kind of automobile. But, like I said before, I'm excited by where we find ourselves today. I'm excited because I know the innovation and creativity that the Ford team is capable of. I'm excited because I know the resources that we can bring to bear once we set our minds on getting in the game. I'm excited because I know how great it's going to feel to have my rebuttal to his article published in the New York Times when this company meets the challenges of this new century and we regain our place as the leaders of the automobile industry. It can be done, we just have to do it. Let's seize this opportunity."
