Paper Summary:

This is a self-reflection paper that describes some of the thoughts that went into the writer's decision to become a nurse. The writer relates that it was a difficult decision for him, both because of his preconceived notions and because of his family and cultural expectations, but now that he had started his studies, he is happy to be part of nursing. This paper identifies four coping mechanisms he used in the past.

"With my father being a pediatrician and my mother being a pharmacist, it always seemed pretty much a given that I'd go into a field that was at least related to medicine. I didn't know exactly what area of the field that I wanted to have a career in. All I knew was that I would eventually follow close to my parents' footsteps. Eventually I studied for my Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences, which seemed to take me in the right direction. Once upon a time, I'd thought of being a doctor, maybe even a pediatrician like my father. I realized, however, that despite my desire, I didn't desire it quite enough to undergo all that was required..."
