When a writer participates in the act of writing, he or she takes control of the environment. A reader, however, passively interprets the reality created by the writer. Over the course of this story, the narrator moves from writer to reader, eventually falling victim to the environment she is attempting to interpret. When the couple moves to the country, the narrator's husband is, essentially, the writer. He creates a world for his wife to interpret.
