Paper Summary:
In this paper, the author berates his decision to implement compulsory drug testing in his department and to force an employee who felt that the test was an invasion of privacy to do the test at the doctor. The paper discusses how the other employees saw this as discrimination and how the issue should have been resolved using workplace conflict resolution.
From the Paper:
"Being in a management or supervisory position becomes a daily learning experience from which we are expected to improve the way we do our jobs and the way we deal with, gain the respect of, and further closer ties with your employees. Sometimes, a decision is easy. Committing a crime (stealing, passing on company trade secrets) creates an obvious decision: fire the guilty party. Sometimes a decision requires careful handling and, often, a sensitivity class (gender or ethnic slurs, sexual harassment, discrimination because of color or national origin). However, the third type of decision- when a good employee sticks to principles he believes are correct and which, in essence, throw a monkey wrench into the smooth operation of company policy requires extremely careful decision making."
