↶ Look Inside

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses how the movie, "X-Men", is not a traditional superhero story and not about individuals who dutifully and seamlessly tried to become a part of mainstream society, but those who were cast off from it because of their status as mutants. It shows how the "X-Men" all have special powers that made them renegades from traditional human social structures when they were revealed to be mutants.

From the Paper:

"One of the most popular recent revivals of a film genre is that of the film based upon a superhero comic strip. Traditionally, the film that comes to mind when one thinks of such a motion picture is something like "Superman." That film tells of a good hero possessed of superhuman powers allied against forces of evil and slightly lesser but still formidable superhuman powers. The tone that particular film took was quite "campy" and humorous. The film was designed, intellectually and stylistically to appeal to the young, most likely younger teenage boys. Its morality was simple and (for the time) its special effects were impressive. However, the comic strip that the film "X-Men" was based upon was quite different in its nature than the more traditional, patriotic heroes of Marvel comic strips such as "Captain America" and "Superman."
