In this article, the writer reviews 'American History X' and discusses how it relates to the subject of popular media and racism. The writer discusses that director Tony Kaye's 'American History X' is not only a film which has a lot to say about racism in modern American, but also a film which many people who are members of clean-cut, suburban, mainstream America can watch and find themselves relating to because the film is a piece of modern media movie entertainment with a story which is told from an entirely white perspective. The writer maintains that many people who happen to be white will be able to identify with the characters depicted in the film because, even though most white people don't behave in an overtly racist manner, they still sometimes hold biased beliefs. The paper points out how this film is different from other movies that have messages about racism and why the points it makes are important.

"The majority of white America may not have the desire to admit it, but many of the main and supporting white characters in Kaye's film say and do things that a lot of white people would like to be able to do and would prefer to be able to say; however, because overt racism is something which is no longer politically correct or acceptable public behavior in many situations, many people choose not to express opinions and thoughts which might be perceived as racist. When Edward Norton's character, Derek, kills the young black men in the opening scene, audiences may find themselves sympathizing with him due to the fact that the young black men appear to be stealing his car. Something that is then singularly intriguing about his film is Derek's transformation while in prison, and that is something that is an engaging experience for the film's audiences to watch. While Norton's character is serving his three-year sentence for voluntary manslaughter, he comes to realize how hollow his fellow white supremacist's beliefs are, befriends a black inmate, and is raped by another white supremacist inmate."
