This paper discusses how the movie "Office Space" is sort of parody that pokes fun, although in an exaggerated way, at the bureaucracy of the workplace. It examines how much like the show "The Office", the movie illustrates the characteristics of "office politics", dealing with issues such as alienation, rules, the hierarchy of office personnel, and modern management theory where there are more bosses and upper management than employees. While very funny, the movie is a good example of what happens with communication and interpersonal relationships on the job where employees feel like prisoners and bosses feel act like guards.
From the Paper:
"Another example of miscommunication in the office is that one of Peter's co-workers - Samir - has an unpronounceable last name. It's a running joke throughout the film. Why nobody ever takes the time to learn it is the question. Oftentimes in these offices where workers aren't allowed an identity, you find disgruntlement. Another example is another worker who name is Michael Bolton is constantly teased about the fact that his name is the same as a cheesy singer whom everyone detests. Both of these men aren't allowed an identity other than what the office workers have labeled them. They become the guy with the unpronounceable last name and the guy named after a cheesy 90s singer.
