The writer asserts that this is a film that had a lot of potential, but devolves into being just another cheesy love story.

"In Memoirs of a Geisha, Ziyi Zhang plays Sayuri, a young girl who becomes the most celebrated geisha in Japan. A Geisha is a type of Japanese escort. These women are trained in the art of conversation, culture, as well as how to seduce a man. However, this group of women is small and extremely competitive. The movie does a good job of showing the life of geishas and how they fit into Japanese culture. For example, early one we see how geishas in training are something akin to slaves who pile up debt that takes years to pay off. Sayuri is brought to a geisha house as a little girl. Because she resists her handlers, she ends up piling up a debt that takes years to pay it off. Eventually, when Sayuri becomes a geisha herself, she sells her virginity to the highest bidder to clear her debt."
