"Maxed Out"
A review of the film "Maxed Out", directed by James Scurlock.
855 words (approx. 3.4 pages) | 1 source | MLA | 2008 United States

Paper Summary:

The paper examines the film "Maxed Out" and discusses how the American nation has been encouraged, culturally, socially and even by their elected leaders to spend money they do not have. The paper explains that "Maxed Out" is a frightening film because it shows how people in the prime of their lives are driven to suicide, since they face the prospect of owing insurmountable sums that they know they can never pay. The paper explains how the film suggests that Americans are becoming indentured servants, with their lives and futures linked to lenders who want them to need to consume more and thus grow more dependent upon credit.

From the Paper:

""Maxed Out" (2005) seems like a particularly significant and prescient film in light of the recent subprime mortgage crisis, and how the fallout of the housing market may have seismic effects upon the confidence of Americans in their economy. The film shows the way unethical lending and banking practices feed off of Americans' desire to have 'the perfect home' or simply a home at all, and to emulate the lives of celebrities and the rich and famous on television--or just around the block."
