798 words (approx. 3.2 pages) | 1 source | MLA | 2010 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper begins by analyzing the introduction of the movie "Jungle Fever," by explaining the meanings behind the lyrics of the song and the different road signs and maps that refer to society's disapproval of interracial relationships. The paper also examines the symbols and metaphors used in the movie as well as the historical instances that Spike Lee makes reference to.

From the Paper:

"In the opening credits "Jungle Fever" was introduced as a "Spike Lee Joint." Along with the name of the production company, the director, and the language used, I understood this to mean that the central audience would be African Americans or at least geared toward their point of view. Before watching the movie I already knew that Spike Lee is an African American and that his work is generally aimed towards his own culture. But in my opinion these three signs assured this belief. Especially as I watched more of the introduction, I realized that the film would be talking place in New York, Harlem in particular, and that the main characters were young adults. I believe that this film wanted to appeal to younger adults because younger people are more likely to be influenced and change the way they think about something, such as discrimination. Older people, on the other hand, are more set in their ways and resistant to change. "
