This paper briefly analyzes this famous 1989 movie directed by Spike Lee. It provides an analysis of the characters and then assesses the role that violence plays in the movie. The issue of racial tensions in a small town are also discussed.
From the Paper:
"In "Do the Right Thing;" a group of young blacks tell the young white man from Boston that he ought to go back to Boston. It appears that inhabitants of the neighborhood or district are demanding to uphold the form of life and the individuality of the community that existed previous to the novel or recent advents. They desire to uphold what they distinguish as the status quo, the distinctiveness of the society, as well as the substance of its principles that existed before. Furthermore, the inhabitants are ethically wrong for seeking to oppose or dishearten the new arrivals. Yet, the underlying question needs to be addressed, particularly in the context of the 1990s when global migration and even interstate immigration are vital and disruptive issues (Norment, 1989)."
