This paper discusses the plot, story, characters and themes of Andre Techine's film, "J'embrasse Pas", which deals with societal influences on and attitudes towards homosexuality. The paper discusses the two main protagonists of the film and parallels their life experiences to illustrate the film's themes.
From the Paper:
"The irony is that from these male homosexual characters to for whom he shows such derision, resentment and distaste at the beginning of the movie, we see the shift in the naivete of Pierre, from someone who is averse to homosexual and to prostitution to someone who becomes the two things that he seems to resent the most at the beginning of the story. He resents them because he has a strong sense of identity, even if he does not yet have a true sense of identity, as he has still young and has ostensibly come to Paris to discover, or realize, that identity. What he fails to realize is what the actual lack of opportunity will force him to do, and he begins a transformation from who he was before he got the city to what the city turns him into."
