Paper Summary:

This paper discusses and reviews the 2006 film, "An Inconvenient Truth," directed by Davis Guggenheim. The paper first discusses the critics' view of the film and whether or not it can be classified as a documentary. The paper also describes the techniques used in the film to further its points regarding global warming and its success in presenting the viewpoints of Al Gore.

From the Paper:

"The documentary can be defined simply as a film depicting reality and using visual recordings of the real world as its material. However, even this definition should not place limitations on what can constitute a documentary. A few years ago, an argument erupted over the film The Thin Blue Line ( 1989, Errol Morris), a film about a court case in which Morris included a visual representation of how the real case might have occurred. These staged scenes are subjective in that they have been shaped and are not real but based on a subjective interpretation of the evidence, but they appear to the viewer to be objective, as if they were taken on the scene at the time of the event (Bates 3). The viewer is asked to sort out the truth in this particular film, and the viewer has to do this by sifting through real images and recreated images as well."
