Year-Round Schooling

This paper examines the differences between year-round and the traditional school calendar and evaluates the possible difficulties and disadvantages that may arise with switching to a year-round education. It then looks at examples of year-round schooling throughout the United States. In the conclusion, the paper argues that, despite initial difficulties, year-round education has much to offer to the changing needs of education in the United States.

"The traditional school calendar was developed over 100 years ago, when most of the United States territories were agricultural communities. Children and teenagers had to assist their families in plantings seeds and harvesting crops. The three-month summer "vacation" was therefore developed to accommodate the needs of farming families (Warrick-Harris 1995). However, because of urbanization and advances in farming technology, a great majority of children no longer have to help out in the field, rendering the initial rationale for the traditional school calendar obsolete."
