Women in Africa

Women in Africa
An overview of the slavery of women on the African continent.
1,125 words (approx. 4.5 pages) | 1 source | 2005 United States

Paper Summary:

Slavery in Europe and the Americas is well known and frequently discussed. Slavery in Africa is far less well known, although it certainly did exist. The paper shows, however, that it was quite different from slavery in Europe and the Americas. In Europe and the Americas, slaves were forcibly abducted from Africa, and taken to foreign lands where it was impossible to hold onto their own cultures.

From the Paper:

"In America, for example, imported slaves even lost their African names, and were given English names. In contrast, in Africa slaves primarily remained within their own country and culture. They retained their names and cultures, but lost their status and freedom. Another difference was that in Europe and the Americas, there was an enormous disparity between free women and slaves."
