"The role of women in the military has been expanded, creating new gender conflicts and concerns. The issue of whether women are to be sent into combat resurfaces again and again. Some branches of the service have greater concern about mixing the sexes under difficult conditions, with the Navy seeing particular problems in having men and women in close quarters for long periods of time. Proponents of a wider role for women see many of these complaints as no more than delaying tactics, while critics suggest that there are real issues to be examined and real problems to be solved.
