The movement for women's rights and suffrage in America was greatly influenced by the movement in Europe; as was Europe impacted by the work being done in America. This paper explains the pre-suffrage role of women, voting laws, and treatment of suffragists. It ties together suffrage in Europe and America and what impacts these women were able to make.

"At about the same time, women's suffragists began to support other reforms, too. Numerous women agreed with the Temperance Movement because they felt drunken husbands pulled their families into poverty. Many also supported anti-slavery reforms because they saw parallels between the positions of women and slaves. Both were expected to be passive, cooperative, and obedient to their husbands/masters. (Footnote 3) It happened to be at the World Anti-Slavery Convention in London in 1840 where the first women's rights leaders met. At the convention, women were supposed to represent organizations as delegates. However, the men debated on whether to include the women and the final decision was to make them sit behind a curtain where they could not be seen or heard."
