"This paper provides a general overview and discussion of several aspects of the women's movement--a history of earlier women's movements in America, ideologies associated with the movement, important women's groups, the effects of stereotyping at home and at work, and the concept of stereotyping in older women.


Prior to the 1800's in America, women were often the subject of witch hunts and burning at the stake. Religious practitioners of the day believed that bewitchment should be treated by exorcism, torture, and sometimes death. There can be little doubt that many of the unfortunate recipients of such treatment were simply mentally ill (Franks & Burtle, 1974, p. 4). Few men were considered witches.
