This paper examines how the past few decades have produced an explosion in the world of technology, and while the United States has long since been considered a leader in the field of wireless technology, it is not the only nation that enjoys its benefits and advances. It looks at how Brazil is an up-and-coming contender for that Number One spot in wireless technology and how, for the past several years, it has worked hard to join the race.

"Telemar, as Brazil's largest phone company is called, agreed to pay 1.1 billion reals for a license to provide cellular services alongside its existing fixed-line area in 16 states in northern and eastern Brazil. Telecom Italia Mobile agreed to pay 997 million reals for a license to provide wireless service in Sao Paulo state, adding the richest and most populous state to its Brazilian service(Wireless, 2002). It also agreed to pay 543 million reals for a license covering Brazil's southern and western regions. Telecom Italia was the lone bidder for those two licenses. The final bids were some 20 percent higher than the $1.095 billion minimum asking price. ''We have every reason to celebrate(Wireless, 2002),'' Communications Minister Joao Pimenta da Veiga told The Associated Press. ''We guaranteed competition, which was our ultimate goal(Wireless, 2002).'' "
