This paper explores a representative sample of the available literature on BDSM, a misunderstood and under-researched aspect of human sexuality. The paper provides a general definition of the term BDSM, outlines traditional prejudices that have consigned its practitioners to the sexual margins, outlines the demographic characteristics of BDSM practitioners and provides suggestions about what can be done by therapists to ensure that their practice best serves the needs of BDSM clients.

"This paper is a literature review of some worthwhile, peer-reviewed articles containing important information on a topic - BDSM - that is frequently ignored or misunderstood. With that uppermost in mind, this paper will review the general definition of BDSM, the definition of BDSM according to the BDSM/leather community and DSM IV definitions of sadism and masochism. This paper will also, so far as the current literature will allow, explore the demographics of BDSM and explain why BDSM is not considered abuse. Proceeding from there, this literature review will explain how BDSM is mythologized by certain persistent stereotypes and unfortunately confused with non-consensual, violent sexual activity. This paper, lastly, will explore the past mythologizing of the gay/lesbian/transgendered community and offer recommendations for therapists treating troubled, unhappy BDSM participants. Finally, this paper will explore the lack of literature that currently exists for this important topic."
