# 54994
A discussion of different Western philosophical approaches to defining wisdom.
1,126 words (approx. 4.5 pages) | 5 sources | MLA | 2004 | United States
Published on: Jan 16, 2005

Paper Summary:

This paper explores the Western tradition of thought relating to wisdom beginning with the philosopher Socrates and extending to authors, Aldus Huxley, and Henry David Thoreau, Joseph Pieper, and psychiatrist and concentration camp survivor, Victor Frenkl. The paper concludes with the assertion that Frenkl, through his experiences and how he chose to handle those experiences, provides the most instructive example of what wisdom is.

From the Paper:

"What is wisdom? The study of philosophy in general is often thought of as the gaining of knowledge. At least, so it is for many philosophy students embarking upon a college course that attempts to introduce them to the cannon of Western thought and to give them the basis for asking the right questions about their daily lives and their daily getting of wisdom, in class and outside of class."
