The paper examines how there are many actualized sociological issues, both past and present, connected to the military and war. These include effects of war on populations, national boundaries, the increased importance of media, economic institutions, systems of government, and technological change and advancement. It discusses how the most noteworthy function of any military is to maintain or establish the sovereignty of a nation and how the military protects a way of life, affecting the nation on both a micro and macro level.

"In a nation that has a military, patriotism is promoted and citizens are afforded personal freedoms and liberties. Patriotism runs higher in the presence of ones own military because it stirs feelings of pride and safety in the citizens that are good for morale. Because there is a military that will fight on behalf of the people, citizens are afforded personal freedoms and liberties. Otherwise, when another nation begins to war with your home nation, they would immediately take it over and force their cultural values and ideals upon you, thus taking away your personal freedoms and liberties."
