"Abstract


Voyeurism and its opposite, exhibitionism, are common sexual disorders. Incidence estimates are not reliable, since only those who are caught and tried or referred by the legal system are noted. Mandatory group therapy, electric shock, and covert sensitization have been somewhat successful in treating these disorders, but no universal treatment has been found. This is because the patients are not a homogeneous group. The extent of their illness, differing social or intellectual backgrounds, as well as their ego deficits and immaturities make a singular approach difficult. This problem is complicated by two factors: most exhibitionists and voyeurs do not consider themselves to be ill, so they do not volunteer for treatment without outside pressure from the courts or their families; and public opinion..."
