↶ Look Inside

Paper Summary:

This paper examines the different resources available on the subject of Voodoo. The author reviews three different books on the subject and details the different topics covered. Some of these include: African and African-American religions, practices, beliefs, and institutions such as music, material culture, deities, healing, slave religion, theology, and religious-based political movements. The materials discussed in these books are written by anthropologists, historians, religious scholars and sociologists.

From the Paper:

"The next book on my list for review was Secrets of Voodoo by Milo Rigaud. I could tell from the very beginning that this book is not one for beginners. The information comes across as very thick and sometimes bogged down with a few too many details, but without a doubt, it's a great resource and the best one on my list. This is a book written by someone who knows what he's talking about. This author provides everything you need to know; you have questions, he has answers. This book was originally published in the 1950's and is filled with folklore, legends, and some academic notes. In the area of voodooism, this book provides extensive information, and some unrelated but insightful notes to lead you deeper into the context of African-based traditions."
