Visuality
A review of how visuality has become a dominant way for communication and understanding ourselves, our society and others.
974 words (approx. 3.9 pages) | 4 sources | MLA | 2008

Paper Summary:

The paper discusses the way in which we interpret how we visualize ourselves and others, the groups in which we find ourselves, and the way in which we view the people around us. The paper states that this enables us to interpret our feelings and those of others with whom we come into contact. The paper further notes that visuality assists us in reaching and mixing with others. The paper discusses that we don't wish to be identical to others, although we wish to be prominent in society and still be part of a group. This is obtained through visuality, what we see and how we interpret it.

From the Paper:

"By looking at the groups that have been presented in the photographs, the consumer automatically and sub-consciously places oneself into one of these 'tribes'. As well as this is also shows that identity isn't a stable formation, but it shifts constantly as we make and re-make ourselves to fit our own place in the world . In doing this, the photograph also draws out how we make and remake our 'look' many times in our lives to negotiate the various social formations or tribes that we find or wish to find ourselves in. The image by portraying a range of different ages, ethnicities, genders and classes shows how visual culture plays a major role in the constitution of oneself as an identity."
