This paper explains that work place violence is the leading cause of death for women in the workplace and the second leading cause for death for men. The author contends that this tragedy could have been prevented if (1) the company had performed a criminal history background check on the employee, (2) the many threatening phone calls to the business after the employee was fired had been reported to the police, (3) the company had a plan of action for dealing with such a threat and (4) the workplace was designed to provide better safety and accessibility. The paper concludes that small companies tend to be more relaxed about hiring and firing individuals; owners of small companies should know how to recognize and prevent violence.

"One such incident of workplace violence occurred on August 27, 2003 at the Windy City Core Supply Corporation, an auto supply warehouse in Chicago, Illinois. On August 27, 2003, at 8:37 a.m. Mr. Salvador Tapia, 36, a former employee of Windy City who had been fired from the company six-months prior returned to the company and killed six of the company's nine employees. This included two owners, who were brothers and one of the owners', son. The third owner Robert Bruggeman was late for work due to a car crash on the expressway. Mr. Tapia was killed in a gun battle with the police."
