This paper discusses the worrying phenomenon of violence in Korean society. It begins by describing the country's turbulent and violent political history in which opposition and rulers were violently disposed of, and how this has possibly impacted today's society. The paper examines several spheres - violence in schools, domestic violence and cyber violence.
From the Paper:
"Korean society has had more than its fair share of violence in many spheres of life, and of especially grave concern, is its domestic and school violence. After the liberation of South Korea in 1945 and up to the outbreak of the Korean War in June 1950, the use of violence to score a point over rival factions was a commonplace occurrence. Political expediency seemed to be reason enough to perpetrate any act of violence, especially during the term of President Syngman Rhee (1948-60). Any opposition to his views was quelled by the use of force in this period. (South Korea: Political Extremism, 1990). For example, the government mobilized the Anticommunist Youth League and members of street gangs to smash facilities of newspapers that dared to write against the government, and to intimidate opposition candidates during election time. The government under Park Chung-hee continued to encourage illegal police practices, such as the torture of dissidents, intellectuals, and even members of the National Assembly. The Korean Central Intelligence Agency (KCIA) also used violent means, including physical threats, to intimidate South Korean journalists in the United States. (South Korea: Political Extremism, 1990)."
