From the Paper:

"Varicose Veins as an Autosomal Dominant Inheritable (Genetic) Trait

The cause of varicose veins is not clear; among the contributing factors suggested as causes are environmental and genetic agents. Varicose veins develop from the failure of valves within the legs to regulate the hydrostatic pressure of blood circulating through the saphenous vein. The main question is whether this failure results from an inherited weakness of the vein walls and the valves or some other inherited mechanism, such as late menarche (1:169), that influences varicose vein development.

In a long-term study on 6,400 people (7), it was determined that among persons with a positive family history, varicosity was on the whole more prevalent than for those with a negative one."
