Values in Social Work

Paper Summary:

This paper examines the theory that the values of social work are based on the individual?s right to self-determination, the promotion of welfare, equality, and distributive justice. The paper explains each of these principles and then addresses some of the contradictions between these principles and the actual application of these principles.

From the Paper:

"The concept of welfare or well-being, the second principle of social work, is somewhat problematic. The reason for this is that well-being and its particular manifestations are often in the eye of the beholder. Cultural considerations for example are one of the factors determining the exact manner in which well-being should be promoted. It is thus clear that the concept is open to interpretation. Here sensitivity to the individual's preferences is extremely important, and the social worker should ensure that the best interest of the individual is promoted."
