This paper discusses the changes involved in moving to Unix as an operating system instead of the more common Windows. The paper contends that the greatest difficulty encountered in moving to a new software environment may be converting old data to a format compatible with the new software. "Unix and related operating systems such as Linux and BSD have been very popular for use in server environments for decades due to their simplicity, configurability and performance, however, other platforms have significant shares of the server market. Migrating from other platforms to Unix can be a serious challenge, but the obstacles are not insurmountable. Existing expertise with other systems, which often use complex, monolithic environments translates poorly to the modular design of Unix. Moving to Unix usually requires replacing existing application software or porting custom tools, which can be difficult and expensive. Migrating the data created and used with the old software tools is time-consuming and usually requires making the data unavailable or read-only during the transition. Despite the potential for high costs in the short term, adopting Unix can be worthwhile for its long-term benefits."
