Its primary industry is the rail freight industry, and as such it is headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska where it manages its overall operations which include over 48,000 employees. This paper reports that UP's operations span both the railroad and trucking industry by virtue of its trucking operations that work in tandem with its rail operations through inter-modal transportation strategies.
