This paper looks at how union membership has always provided a bargaining power to the workers when dealing with employers. It examines the breakdown of union membership, with an emphasis on female membership. It analyzes data that has been collected from various sources, including data for occupation type and age, in an attempt to reach some meaningful conclusions. The data is based on figures and estimates for the year 2002. Charts and diagrams are provided.
From the Paper:
"The wages for the low paid service sector which includes occupations like retailing, waiting, scrubbing, maid and cleaner, janitorial and clerical type occupations are relatively low and it is difficult for individuals to grow either within such jobs or to be promoted. The jobs can, therefore, prove to be a poverty trap and destruction for the individual doing such an occupation. There are organized labor union movements which attempt to work for the betterment of their members, but it is difficult to organize a powerful union movement for occupations like maids and cleaners since the membership of such a union is highly distributed and poor."
