US Merchant Marine in World War II

# 44695
US Merchant Marine in World War II
This paper examines the importance of the United States Merchant Marine in World War II.
2,900 words (approx. 11.6 pages) | 12 sources | 2002 United States

Paper Summary:

The author notes that merchant shipping determined what the Allies could or could not do militarily in World War II. When sinkings of Allied merchant vessels exceeded production, or when slow turnarounds, convoy delays, roundabout routing, and long voyages led to heavy losses, the war effort suffered. Had it not been for the mass production of Liberty and Victory ships and the courageous service and sacrifice of thousands of Merchant mariners, the war would have been prolonged for months, if not for years, and may even have been lost.
