From the Paper:
"United's R & D division operates as part of the airline's Information Services Division. Its objectives are to develop models that: increase the accuracy of forecasting passenger demand; enable better decision-making models on fare structures (Kelly, July 1999); increase the quality and efficiency of crew rostering; flight sequencing and scheduling to improve on-time performance; aircraft maintenance flows to minimize aircraft ground time; and flight planning to minimize fuel consumption and flight time (Informs Online). The objectives of R & D are clearly stated and vital to the airline achieving customer satisfaction through on-time flights, quality in-flight service (including safety), and convenient schedules/ connections. Successful R & D efforts in areas like maintenance and fuel consumption are major contributors to UAL's efforts in cost reduction."
