These include the growing power and influence of China, particularly as regards Taiwan but also in the area and in the world at large. There is a continuing potential for conflict between India and Pakistan and North and South Korea. Major elements of the struggle against Islamist militancy and terrorism are centered in this area. Iraq and Iran are not that far away. Al Qaeda is based in Pakistan.
