Paper Summary:

This paper explains the discusses causes, effects and prevention of tuberculosis. The author points out the nursing intervention, treatment and prognosis. The paper concludes that TB is a manageable and preventable disease, which continues to be contracted unchecked in many parts of the world and continues to be found in even the most medically advanced nations.

From the Paper:

"Tuberculosis is caused by bacteria that attack any part of the body, but most frequently effects the lungs. The symptoms of tuberculosis (TB) include persistent hard cough, coughing blood, fevers, weight loss, and night sweats. The disease can cause bone inflammation and infections, can damage the endocrine and immune systems, and can damage the lungs and kidneys. If not treated or managed effectively, TB is fatal. In fact, TB does kill more than 2 million people per year. It is highly resistant to treatment and very easily spread, most easily through breathing air that a contagious sufferer has coughed into. TB represents a two-fold challenge for nursing. First, TB is preventable among a well-educated and watchful public. It is the nurse's responsibility to educate patients about it. Secondly, TB is extremely easy to spread, which requires strict quarantine and adherence to the treatment regimen."
