Most people connect Tourette's syndrome with outbursts of strings of obscenities, an involuntary act known as coprolalia. In truth, only about 10 percent of sufferers actually exhibit this symptom. This paper presents an overview of Tourette's syndrome It examines possible causes of this disease and potential treatments that are used today.

"New studies suggest that tics are related to dopamine receptors that are supersensitive to the chemical in certain areas of the brain. This part of the brain normally stops movements that are made purposely. Patients with Tourette's syndrome have these supersensitive receptors that receive even the smallest sign from dopamine as a sign to let loose the urges they feel, this results in tics. Some research suggests that tics are caused by higher than normal levels of dopamine. Discovering the role of dopamine in treatment is helping to find better treatments production and use."
