Ticks
A look at the three different families, their traits, life cycle, feeding, communications, habitats and hosts.
1,350 words (approx. 5.4 pages) | 4 sources | 1993 United States

From the Paper:

"Three families of ticks are recognized in the world today: the Ixodidae (hard ticks), the Argasidae (soft ticks, and the Nuttalliellidae (a group with characteristics of both hard and soft ticks). The terms hard and soft refer to the presence of a dorsal scutum or "plate" in the Oxodidae, which is absent in the Argasidae (3:13). Soft ticks, unlike hard ticks, usually are not important carriers of diseases (4:927). For example, lyme disease, caused by a spiral-shaped bacterium called Borrelia burgdorferi (1:110), is found on deer ticks (a hard tick). The primary tick which carries this bacterium is the deer tick, Ixodes dammini, in the United States, and the European castor bean tick, I. ricinus, in Europe (3:36). However, the lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum, has been known to transmit it as well (2:1)."
