Essay (General) # 53124 :: Tibet
This paper discusses the effect of Communist China on Tibet.
Written in 2004; 3,560 words; 7 sources; APA; $ 99.95
Paper Summary:
This paper explains that the rapid economic change of Tibet does not necessarily translate to "development" when it mainly benefits Chinese settlers and further marginalizes Tibetans within their own country. The author points out that the Chinese policies focusing on rapid economic growth exploit Tibet's natural resources, while opening the country to foreign investors. The paper contends that the best solution to Tibet's problem is to achieve genuine autonomy for the three traditional provinces of Tibet, giving Tibetans the freedom to pursue economic development and to promote their identity and culture within the overall framework of the People's Republic of China.

From the Paper:
"Despite China's claims that Tibet has always been part of China, Tibet has a history of at least 1300 years of independence from China. In 821 China and Tibet ended almost 200 years of fighting with a treaty engraved on three stone pillars, one of which still stands. According to the treaty, Tibet and China are entitled to the country and frontiers of which they are now possessed. The entire region to the East of that being the country of Great China and the entire region to the West being the country of Great Tibet, from either side there shall be no hostile invasion, and no seizure of territory, reads the treaty."
