Paper Summary:

This paper describes an experiment done to examine how infectious microbes may threaten us, by looking at the levels of E. coli and S. epidermis in a number of places within a domestic setting. The paper offers techniques in sterilizing the household from these microbes that have been around for over a million years.

From the Paper:

"From the moment of conception until indeed, even after our deaths -- humans are the targets for attacks by multitudes of other living organisms, all of them competing for a place in the common environment of our own bodies. Some of these attacks will go entirely unnoticed. Others may prove crippling or deadly. But however serious the result, there is simply no denying the fact that They are out there and They are after us.
But these creatures bent on assault do not need black helicopters or futuristic cloaking devices to use in their invasions: They make their way by adopting a simple yet highly effective strategy: They are simply too small for us to see. They are microbes the viruses, bacteria and fungi that are in the air we breathe, the soil we walk on, the water we drink, the food we eat, on our pets. They surround us at work and school and even invade our homes, the very places where we believe ourselves to be the safest.
This paper describes an experiment done to examine one arena in which infectious microbes may threaten us, looking at the levels of E. coliand S. epidermis in a number of places within a domestic setting. The experiment was designed to determine what are the most effective means of preventing these two organisms from thriving in one's household. The reason that these particular organisms were tested for and the reason behind the places that they were selected was an ongoing concern for the health of my two-year-old daughter who has suffered from repeated viral and bacterial infections that obviously produce short-term discomfort and may have long-term health consequences."
