Theoretical Perspectives Used in Counseling

Counseling is not a one-size-fits-all venture. Fortunately for clients, they have access to a variety of counselors, many of whom have different theoretical perspectives. This paper examines the psychodynamic, cognitive behavioural, and humanistic theoretical perspectives of counseling, with an eye toward the personality types best served by these perspectives.

"The psychodynamic method of counseling is also known as "psychoanalytic" therapy. It is a non-empirical method of counseling focusing on defense mechanisms and the subconscious mind. This therapy makes the assumption that there have been events and memories in a person's life that he or she is unable to face. Because of the pain associated with these memories, they are often submerged, or masked by defense mechanisms."
