Paper Summary:

The paper analyzes the story "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. The paper discusses the story of a woman's descent into madness because of the oppressive nature of her husband. The paper continues by explaining that it is a metaphor for the way women were treated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when men dominated their lives and controlled their activities.

From the Paper:

"In the late th and early th centuries, American women did not enjoy the freedom they do today and their roles were defined for them by men. This was particularly true of middle-class women and men placed them in an ideological prison which effectively silenced them. Women were often virtually imprisoned in their homes with servants tending to the needs of the family, caring for children and taking care of the house."
