Paper Summary:
The author of this paper examines the development of the women's temperance movement in the United States and it's influence on the passing of the 18th amendment to the Constitution of the United States - prohibition. The paper examines in detail the historical events and developments that encouraged the formation of various groups campaigning against alcohol consumption and the influence of women both on the founding and impact of these groups.
From the Paper:
"Through the pledge of many professionals in the medical field, the American Temperance Society realized that the negative medical evidence from the use of alcohol was more persuasive to people than the spiritual arguments that they had been making (Tyrrell, 89). This became the new framing for the Women's Christian Temperance Movement because medical evidence convinced many more people that ardent spirits were indeed a social issue. This new framing also suggested that the prohibition of alcohol was the solution to this problem. Once a problem and solution were recognized, people were inspired to join the movement."
