This paper discusses how the war on terrorism being fought currently can be closely measured against the work of Machiavelli, the historic philosopher who believed that the best way to rule was to use force and be single-minded in that force. It looks at how, in his famous work "The Prince", he wrote that remaining focused on war and acts of war that may be done against the land, as well as acts that the military can do against others for the purpose of remaining strong, are of paramount importance to anyone who wants to remain in power. It compares this view to what is happening currently in the war on terrorism, as President Bush continues to seek and destroy members of terrorist groups worldwide.

The USA Patriot Act, enacted seven weeks after the September 11 attacks, granted the federal government sweeping new powers to expand surveillance, curtail financing, and deport aliens in connection with terrorist activity. The first major piece of legislation to respond to apparent weaknesses in U.S. national security, the statute expanded the range of aliens who could be excluded or deported from the United States on terrorism-related grounds, while reducing the procedural protections available to them. Under the new law, immigrants "certified" as threats to national security must be held in government custody without bond pending deportation proceedings and removal from the country."
